Funding & Support
MetroWest Legal Services receives funding from public and private sources including government agencies, law firms, corporations, foundations and individual donors.
Our primary source of funding comes from the Massachusetts Legal Assistance Corporation (MLAC), a nonprofit corporation established by the State Legislature in 1983 to ensure that people with restricted income or with non-criminal legal problems would have access to legal information, advice and representation. MLAC allocates funds to civil legal aid programs in Massachusetts, through a combination of a state budget appropriation and revenue from the Massachusetts IOLTA (interest on lawyers’ trust accounts) Committee.
Federal, state and foundation grants provide 40% of our funding, with an additional 20% provided by community programs and charitable foundations.
An increasing percentage of support comes from private individuals, law firms and businesses either through donations or sponsorships. This unrestricted revenue is critical in augmenting our general operating expenses.
